The reading contest on “Dang Thuy Tram’s diary” was launched in Laos on Jan 14, 2011 to encourage Laos young people to study the immortality mirror of a Vietnamese hero who sacrificed her life for the independence of Vietnam.

The contest is co-organised by the External Relations Commission of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party (LPRP), the Laos- Vietnam Friendship Association (VLFA), the Lao Ministry of Information and Culture, Lao People’s Revolutionary Youth Union (LPRYU) and Vietnam Cultural Center in Laos. It aims to welcome Vietnam ’s 11 th National Party Congress and the 9 th LPRP Congress as well as to celebrate the 80 th anniversary of Vietnam ’s Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union and the 56 th anniversary of the LPRYU.

As sponsor of the contest, Unitel will give final winners many rewads such as its products and services with the total value of over 11 million kips. Besides, Unitel also give an Unitel scholarship of around 4,5 million kips for the best winner to support in the life and studying. With these activities, Unitel would like to encourage the Laos young generation to develop their study andcontribute to the special friendship between the 2 countries.

Dang Thuy Tram was born November 26, 1943 in Hue, Vietnam and died on June 22, 1970 in Duc Pho, Quang Ngai province, Vietnam. She was a Vietnamese civilian doctor who worked as a battlefield surgeon for North Vietnam during the Vietnam War. She was killed, in disputed circumstances, at the age of 26, by American forces while travelling on a trail in the Ba To jungle in the Quang Ngai. In July 2005, Dang Thuy Tram’s diary was published in Vietnamese and quickly became a bestseller. It was also translated into other languages, including Lao.

The contest will close in mid-May. Winners will receive rewards from Unitel and join a trip to Vietnam’s city capital of Hanoi and the central province of Quang Ngai where Dang Thuy Tram died at a makeshift clinic during the war.
